Practicing Gratitude

How often do you stop and make a list of all things in your life that you are most grateful for? Reminding yourself to feel grateful is one of the best things that you can do for yourself. Studies have shown that people who regularly practice feeling thankful are more likely to have greater health benefits. A psychology professor at the University of Utah, suggest that grateful people may be more likely to:

Take better care of themselves physically and mentally
Engage in more protective health behaviours and maintenance
Get more regular exercise
Eat a healthier diet
Have improved mental alertness
Schedule regular physical examinations with their doctor
Cope better with stress and daily challenges
Feel happier and more optimistic
Avoid problematic physical symptoms
Have stronger immune systems
Maintain a brighter view of the future

Surprised? With that list who wouldn’t want to try it?

In a stuck moment, it’s sometimes hard to see positive forces and I too still have an annoying tendency to focus on the negatives. This is something that I am working on. According to Dr. Robert Emmons there are 3 stages
Recognising what we are grateful for,
Acknowledging it,
Appreciating it.

Simple right? Gratitude requires practice but consider all the good things that can happen if you start reminding yourself to be grateful, even if its just once a day. If you identify something or someone with a negative trait, switch it in your mind to a positive trait with practice this will become easier.

When you can see the good as well as the bad it becomes more difficult to complain and stay stuck in a situation. Gratitude puts situations into perspective, it can also help us realise what we have. Gratitude makes us happier!!

Keep a gratitude Journal

Recording what you are grateful for in a journal is a great way to give thanks on a regular basis. A simple way to make this habit stick is to take 1 minute in the morning to get a good start to your day by finding 3 small or big things you are grateful for in your life and writing them down. You can be grateful for Nature, people, health, anything, its amazing what you notice when you focus on feeling grateful and making a commitment to writing down good things make it more likely that you will notice good things as they happen to you.

Express Gratitude

Don’t just keep gratitude in your head, express it, and tell the people in your life that you are grateful. You can tell them in person or by email, you don't have to be mushy or over-the-top just let them know that you are grateful for them being in your life. Imagine their joy when you tell them how grateful you are, and seeing their joy will make you happier too. Just a small text can make a big impact on someone’s day, So go on, send them a text message now.

True gratitude shouldn’t leave you feeling like you owe other people something after all, it's all about feeling good and creating a cycle of good karma
